St Mary's Church | Bergen

St. Mary's Church, known locally as Mariakirken, is the oldest existing building in Bergen. You can identify it by its distinctive two-towered west front, a silhouette that has defined this spot since the building of the church began between eleven thirty and eleven seventy. Constructed primarily of soapstone, the church survives as a rare example of a Romanesque basilica in Norway, with its massive stone walls and narrow windows reflecting the construction style of the twelfth century.
