Rosenkrantz Tower

museum

The Rosenkrantz Tower is a thick-walled stone structure rising from the Bergenhus Fortress, recognizable by its combination of medieval keep foundations and later Renaissance expansions. It began as a residence for King Magnus the Lawmender in the twelve seventies, serving as the home of the last kings to rule from Bergen, including King Eirik Magnusson. By the fifteen sixties, the Danish governor Erik Rosenkrantz expanded the tower, incorporating Scottish architectural influences to create a fortified residence that served as a symbol of Danish administrative control over the city.
