Kjøttbasaren, or the Meat Bazaar, is a neo-Romanesque building at the edge of the Vågen harbor that features distinctive masonry and arched windows. When it opened in eighteen seventy-seven, the structure served a specific municipal purpose: centralizing the city's meat trade to ensure hygienic standards and prevent fraud. Designed by architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe, it originally functioned as an open hall containing forty-four sales stalls and twenty-seven cellar storage units.
