Bergenhus Fortress

landmark

Bergenhus Fortress is defined by its collection of heavy stone structures, including the medieval Håkon’s Hall and the distinctive Rosenkrantz Tower, all gathered on a patch of land known as Holmen that guards the entrance to the harbor. This site served as a royal residence in the thirteenth century when Bergen was the capital of Norway. Later, the area evolved into a military fortification, with ramparts that helped solidify its role in guarding the city’s lifeblood, the Vågen harbor.
