Golden House

The Golden House is distinguished by its facade, which is densely packed with gilded stone reliefs, bas-reliefs of historical battles, and busts of rulers and statesmen. Built between sixteen oh nine and sixteen eighteen for the Gdańsk mayor Jan Speymann, the townhouse is a prominent example of Flemish Mannerist architecture. Four statues representing Cleopatra, Oedipus, Achilles, and Antigone stand along the top balustrade, while the entrance displays the Latin inscription, "Act justly, fear no one."
