The Great Armoury is recognizable by its façade of fine red Dutch brick, intricately adorned with gilded ornaments and sandstone carvings that make the expansive structure appear as if it were four separate, narrow townhouses joined together. Built between sixteen hundred two and sixteen hundred five, this Mannerist building was designed by the architect Antoni van Obberghen to house the city's military equipment during a time of mounting tension with Sweden.
