Zubizuri

The Zubizuri is a slender, white steel footbridge that curves across the Nervión River, held aloft by a single, dramatic arch. Spanning seventy-five meters, the structure connects the Campo Volantín and Uribitarte banks. Its name is the Basque term for white bridge, a color the architect, Santiago Calatrava, selected to represent the urban renewal of Bilbao following the decline of its maritime industry. When it opened in nineteen ninety-seven, the bridge was a centerpiece of the city's post-industrial transformation.
