Erriberako Merkatua, or the Ribera Market, stretches for one hundred thirty-four meters along the bank of the Nervión River at the edge of the Casco Viejo. Built in nineteen twenty-nine, the reinforced concrete structure features extensive stained glass and latticework that give the building the appearance of a ship anchored to the riverbank. This design by architect Pedro de Ispizua replaced a succession of open-air stalls that had occupied this same riverside spot since the fourteenth century.
