Doktor Fleming Enparantza is a public square named in honor of the Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming. The plaza is marked by its open urban layout, typical of the residential areas within Bilbao’s Abando district. Fleming is commemorated across Spain because his nineteen twenty-eight discovery of penicillin fundamentally changed medicine. The antibiotic proved particularly effective against infections that were once lethal, such as those caused by injuries in agricultural work or, famously, in the bullring.
