Gorte Kalea, also known as Calle Cortes, runs through the San Francisco neighborhood of Bilbao. It takes its name from the Constituent Cortes of eighteen sixty-nine, the first elected by universal male suffrage following the downfall of Queen Isabel the Second. The street was developed between eighteen seventy and eighteen ninety to house workers for the nearby Miribilla mines, remaining separate from the city’s official expansion projects of that era.
