Mala Gissona Beer House occupies a corner at Zabaleta Street fifty-three, identifiable by its industrial-minimalist decor that reflects the rugged spirit of an old port tavern. Founded by childhood friends Iban Zabala and Manu Murillo, the space takes its name from a phrase recorded in a fifteenth-century Basque-Icelandic dictionary. When Basque whalers traveled to Icelandic waters, the locals used the expression "For ju Mala Gissona," meaning "you are a bad man," to describe the tough, weather-hardened sailors who arrived on their shores.
