St Patrick's Church, Belfast

St Patrick’s Church on Donegall Street is identified by a seven-foot-tall sandstone statue of Saint Patrick carved by James Pearse, which stands in the tympanum above the main entrance. The current building, a Romanesque Revival structure, was consecrated in eighteen seventy-seven. Its construction was unusual because the builders, the Collen Brothers, erected the new church entirely around the walls of an existing eighteen-fifteen chapel. Once the new outer shell was complete, they demolished the smaller original building from the inside out.
