The Custom House is a symmetrical, two-story building designed in the Italianate palazzo style. It is recognized by the carvings on its eastern pediment, where stone figures of Britannia, Mercury, and Neptune gaze toward the harbor. Fulton, the structure was designed by the architect Charles Lanyon to house the city’s burgeoning trade operations. At the time of its completion, Belfast was rising as a major industrial center, and customs revenue collected here trailed only those of London and Liverpool.
