Belfast City Hall is distinguished by a large, lantern-crowned copper dome that rises one hundred seventy-three feet above Donegall Square. This Baroque Revival building, completed in nineteen oh six, was commissioned after Queen Victoria granted Belfast city status in eighteen eighty-eight. The structure was financed entirely by profits from the city's gas industry, a reflection of the wealth generated during Belfast's era as a global leader in linen production and shipbuilding.
