Crumlin Road Gaol, known locally as the Crum, is defined by its massive walls of black basalt rock. Designed by architect Sir Charles Lanyon and opened in eighteen forty-six, it stands as the only remaining Victorian-era prison building in Northern Ireland. Its layout follows a radial cellular system, featuring four wings that fan out from a central hub called the Circle, an arrangement intended to enforce strict isolation among inmates.
