Telegraph Building

The Telegraph Building on Royal Avenue is defined by its facade of red brick and Dumfries red sandstone, a structure completed in eighteen eighty-six to house the Belfast Telegraph. Designed by architect Henry Seaver, the building served as the newspaper’s headquarters and printing works for over a century. During the German air raids of nineteen forty-one, the structure suffered damage that remains visible today; a small plaque near a blocked-up corner doorway marks these historic scars, commemorating a period when the newspaper famously continued to publish under the banner of a city-wide directive to “Carry On, Belfast.”
