The Merchant Hotel occupies a grand, two-story sandstone building on Waring Street with an Italianate facade featuring elaborate sculptures of Britannia, Justice, and Commerce. Built between eighteen fifty-eight and eighteen sixty, the structure was originally the headquarters of the Ulster Bank. Its directors held a competition for the design, eventually choosing the Glaswegian architect James Hamilton to create what local newspapers at the time called a commercial palace.
