North Street in Belfast is characterized by the wide, open gaps between its buildings, where paved parking lots have replaced the city’s historic nineteenth-century streetscape. Once a dense, vibrant artery lined with textile warehouses and shops, the area underwent decades of demolition and planning blight, leaving behind these empty spaces. The street is one of the oldest in the city, originally named Goose Lane because farmers once drove their flocks through the North Gate to reach pasture land beyond the walled settlement.
