St Malachy's Church

St Malachy's Church on Alfred Street is defined by its red-brick exterior, crowned with castellated parapets and twin octagonal turrets. Architect Thomas Jackson designed the building in a Tudor Revival style, drawing inspiration from Elizabethan Gothic architecture rather than the traditional styles of nineteenth-century cathedrals. Construction began on the feast of Saint Malachy in eighteen forty-one, supported by a three-thousand-pound donation from Captain Thomas Griffith and land gifted by a local merchant, Adam McClean.
