In April nineteen sixty-eight, a large, two-story Georgian-style house at three hundred forty-seven Arguello Boulevard became the center of a radical social experiment. Founded by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, the House of Love and Prayer served as a bridge between the San Francisco counterculture and traditional Hasidic Judaism. Carlebach, a musician and teacher who moved through the city's hippie scene, envisioned a sanctuary where people would feel uniquely welcomed, famously stating that when you arrive, someone loves you, and when you leave, someone misses you.
