Arroyo Dolores

Arroyo Dolores is a buried river flowing beneath the Mission District. In seventeen seventy-six, Spanish explorers identified a waterway near their expedition route and named it for the religious feast day of the Friday of Sorrows, or Dolores. While the original creek followed a path near fourteenth street, colonial misidentification eventually attached the name to a second stream running along what is now eighteenth street.
