Lovers’ Lane at the Presidio

Lovers' Lane is the oldest foot trail in the Presidio, a path marked by its long, straight trajectory through a towering eucalyptus grove. Established in the eighteenth century, the route originally provided a shortcut for Spanish soldiers and missionaries traveling from the garrison to Mission Dolores. In the late nineteenth century, as the United States Army transformed the Presidio, soldiers began using the path to reach the trolley lines that connected them to their sweethearts in San Francisco, which earned the trail its name.
