San Francisco VA Medical Center

The San Francisco VA Medical Center occupies twenty-nine acres in the Richmond District, perched on the site of the former Fort Miley military reservation. You can identify the original campus by its unique Mayan Deco architectural style, a design choice that was popular across California during the early nineteen thirties. When the facility opened in nineteen thirty-four, it replaced the army’s coastal defense batteries, which had guarded the entrance to the bay since the turn of the century.
