Kalamaja wooden district

Kalamaja is marked by its rows of colorful wooden apartment houses, many built between the late nineteenth century and the nineteen thirties. These two- and three-story structures, often featuring symmetrical facades, were originally constructed to provide housing for the thousands of workers who arrived when the railway connected Tallinn to Saint Petersburg in eighteen seventy.
