Viru Gate

The Viru Gate is defined by two stout, ivy-covered stone towers topped with conical red-tiled roofs. These structures mark the eastern entrance to the medieval Old Town of Tallinn and are the surviving foregate towers of a once-extensive fourteenth-century defensive complex. When first constructed, the site included a larger square gatehouse, a deep moat, and a drawbridge, all designed to protect the city from invaders.
