The Lycée Carnot on Boulevard Malesherbes is recognizable by its expansive, neoclassical facade constructed of white stone, brick, and ceramic tiles. Founded in eighteen sixty-nine as the École Monge, the school was designed to provide a modern, secular education. It underwent a significant expansion between eighteen seventy-five and eighteen seventy-seven, during which the architect Henri Degeorge and the engineer Gustave Eiffel collaborated to create a vast, light-filled central space known as the Eiffel Hall.
