The rectangular square you are approaching in the seventeenth arrondissement is officially named for General Georges Catroux. A career soldier born in Limoges in eighteen seventy-seven, Catroux served in both World Wars and became a high-ranking officer in the Free French forces. He is remembered for his diplomatic work across the French colonial empire, including his time as Governor General of French Indochina and his role in proclaiming the independence of Syria and Lebanon.
