The Thermes Sextius is a large modern spa facility in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, recognizable by its combination of contemporary architecture and visible ancient ruins. The site is built directly over the natural hot springs that first drew the Roman consul Caius Sextius Calvinus to this location in one hundred twenty-three before Christ. He founded the city of Aquae Sextiae—the Waters of Sextius—here, establishing a thermal tradition that has defined the town for over two millennia.
