Saint Jean de Malte

religious

The Église Saint-Jean-de-Malte is marked by a sixty-seven-meter bell tower that serves as the highest point in all of Aix-en-Provence. Completed between twelve seventy-two and twelve seventy-seven, it holds the distinction of being the first entirely Gothic church built in the Provence region. The facade features a severe appearance with narrow loopholes echoing the military origins of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, who originally commissioned the structure on the outskirts of the city walls.
