The Hôtel de Ville of Aix-en-Provence is defined by its grand, Italianate Baroque façade and its location beside a tall clock tower that rises from Roman foundation stones. Built between sixteen fifty-five and sixteen sixty-eight under the direction of architect Pierre Pavillon, the structure replaced an older town hall that was burned during an invasion in the sixteenth century. It remains a center for local administration, featuring a square inner courtyard and a stately entrance framed by Doric columns.
