The Fontaine des Neuf-Canons sits on the Cours Mirabeau, covered in a persistent layer of green moss that often obscures its stone form. Architect Laurent Vallon designed this fountain in sixteen ninety-one, giving it a low profile and a large, accessible basin. It was constructed specifically to serve the herds of sheep that once traveled from Arles toward their summer pastures in the Alps. The municipality replaced an earlier drinking trough with this ornate structure to ensure the livestock had a reliable watering point as they passed through the city.
