The Hôtel Maurel de Pontevès, located at thirty-eight Cours Mirabeau, is immediately identifiable by the two muscular figures known as Atlases that flank its doorway and support the balcony above. Built between sixteen forty-seven and sixteen fifty-one, this mansion is the oldest private townhouse on the Cours Mirabeau, standing in the Mazarin district. Architects Jean Lombard and Pierre Pavillon designed the structure for Pierre Maurel, a wealthy cloth merchant who purchased the marquisate of Pontevès after rising to prominence in Provençal society.
