The Fontaine Moussue stands along the Cours Mirabeau as a rounded, boulder-like mound entirely cloaked in a thick layer of moss and mineral deposits. Built in sixteen sixty-seven by the architect Jacques Fossé, it was the first fountain constructed on this prominent thoroughfare. While it was originally designed with sculptural details, including a triton and later four figures of children supporting a basin, those elements gradually vanished beneath a growing, hardened shell of limestone created by the steady flow of water.
