The Providenzkirche stands out on the Hauptstrasse with its white-plastered walls and an octagonal bell tower made of sandstone that rises to a slate-covered dome. Elector Karl Ludwig commissioned this building between sixteen fifty-nine and sixteen sixty-one to provide a home for the city’s Lutheran community. He named it after the Latin motto Dominus providebit, or the Lord will provide, reflecting his focus on divine guidance during a time of intense religious division in the region.
