Henkersteg

The Henkersteg is a covered wooden footbridge that stretches across the Pegnitz River, easily identified by its timber-framed roof and its connection to the stone Henkerturm. Built in fourteen fifty-seven, the bridge originally allowed the city executioner to move between his isolated living quarters in the nearby tower and the rest of Nuremberg. In the Middle Ages, the executioner was considered a social outcast, and the bridge provided a private path to ensure he avoided direct contact with the city's honorable citizens.
