The Hauptmarkt is identified by the nineteen-meter Schöner Brunnen, a spire-like Gothic fountain that rises from the center of the cobbles. This expansive square was established in the fourteenth century by Emperor Charles IV. He ordered the destruction of the city's Jewish quarter to clear the site, later decreeing that this new space become the hub for Nuremberg’s trade and civic life.
