Mautkeller

The Mautkeller sits beneath the massive Mauthalle, a building identifiable by its long, imposing sandstone walls and a five-story roof punctuated by tall, steep gables. Constructed between fourteen ninety-eight and fifteen oh two as the city’s largest granary, the Mauthalle was designed to keep Nuremberg fed during times of crisis. Its name, meaning "toll hall," arrived only in the nineteenth century when the structure became the city's customs and weighing office.
