The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg rises on a sandstone ridge as a collection of medieval stone structures, defined most clearly by the tall, cylindrical Sinwell Tower. During the Middle Ages, the Holy Roman Empire lacked a permanent capital, and power instead traveled with the emperor. Because this castle served as a critical stop on those royal journeys, every Holy Roman Emperor between ten fifty and fifteen seventy-one stayed within these walls.
