Kettensteg

The Kettensteg is a slender pedestrian bridge spanning the river Pegnitz, recognized by the long iron chains that suspend its walkway above the water. Completed in December eighteen twenty-four, it stands as the oldest surviving iron suspension bridge in continental Europe. Mechanical engineer Conrad Georg Kuppler designed the structure, drawing inspiration from English bridge designs to create a span that relies on wrought iron eyebars rather than wire ropes.
