Tugendbrunnen

The Tugendbrunnen, or Fountain of Virtue, rises from an octagonal basin on Lorenzer Platz as a dense, multi-tiered tower of bronze figures. Created between fifteen eighty-four and fifteen eighty-nine by the sculptor Benedikt Wurzelbauer, it stands on what was once a cemetery. The fountain was commissioned by the city council as a functional water source, but also as a public statement of Nuremberg’s wealth and moral standing during its time as a free imperial city.
