Carlsplatz is a bustling square defined by its collection of over sixty permanent market stalls, protected by glass canopies and pavilions. It serves as the oldest weekly market in Düsseldorf, occupying a site that was originally laid out as part of a southern urban expansion in the late eighteenth century. The square is named for Duke Carl Theodor, the ruler who commissioned the development of this district to relieve the overcrowding of the city's older market areas near the river.
