Pandey Ghat is identifiable by the series of stone steps descending to the Ganges and the large pipal tree at the top, where several stone serpent idols known as nagas are placed. Formerly called Sarveshwar Ghat after the nearby Sarveshwara temple, this site was renamed in the nineteenth century for Babua Pandey, a renowned wrestler from Bihar who established a traditional wrestling arena, or akhara, above these steps.
