The Jantar Mantar in Varanasi is identifiable by a collection of massive stone and masonry instruments situated atop the Man Mahal palace, overlooking the Ganges River. Constructed in seventeen thirty-seven by Maharaja Jai Singh the Second of Jaipur, this site served as one of five astronomical observatories he commissioned across northern India. Unlike portable brass tools of the era, these geometric structures were designed for naked-eye observations, allowing scholars to track planetary motion, determine local time, and predict eclipses with high precision.
