Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat is defined by a wide, stepped stone embankment that serves as the primary riverfront gathering place in Varanasi. Its name translates to the Ghat of Ten Horses, referencing a Hindu legend in which Lord Brahma performed a ten-horse sacrifice at this location to welcome Lord Shiva to the city. While these mythological origins date back to antiquity, the physical structure as it appears today largely reflects renovations carried out by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar in seventeen seventy-four.
