Chet Singh Ghat is distinguished by the massive, fort-like palace that rises directly from the water's edge, its red sandstone walls built solid at the base to withstand the seasonal rise of the Ganges. Originally known as Shivala Ghat, the site was constructed in the eighteenth century by the rulers of the princely state of Benares.
