Akhara Goswami Tulsidas

The Akhara Goswami Tulsidas at Tulsi Ghat is marked by its sunken pit of soft, crimson earth, carefully prepared with mustard oil, turmeric, and camphor. This traditional wrestling arena, also known as the Swaminath Akhara, is one of the oldest in Varanasi and traces its roots back to the sixteenth century. It is named for the poet-saint Tulsidas, who lived and worked on these riverbanks while composing the Ramcharitmanas and the Hanuman Chalisa.
