Chauki Ghat, (Varanasi)

Chauki Ghat features wide, open platforms and iron railings that distinguish it from the dense clusters of buildings found at other riverfront sites. This ghat takes its name from the Hindi word for a police outpost, reflecting a period when it served as a watch station to observe activity along the Ganges. Built in the mid-nineteenth century by the Sri Kumaraswamy Mutt, the site historically marked a boundary where the urban life of the city met the stillness of the river.
