The Hotel Carlton occupies a triangular site on Plaza Federico Moyúa, defined by its French Second Empire style and tapered corners. Designed by the architect Manuel María Smith and inaugurated in February nineteen twenty-six, it was built to provide Bilbao with a luxury hotel capable of matching other major European capitals. The building is distinguished by its central rotunda, which is covered by a large, leaded stained-glass dome.
