Plaza Berria, also known as Plaza Nueva, is a rectangular, neoclassical square defined by sixty-four semicircular arches that house traditional taverns and shops. Completed in eighteen fifty-one after decades of planning and construction, it sits within the Casco Viejo as an orderly contrast to the surrounding medieval streets. Golden masonry sandstone frames the open space, which was built to host the social and commercial life of the city.
