The Dirty Onion and Yardbird

The most distinctive feature of this site is an exposed, exterior timber-frame structure that frames the beer garden at the front of the complex. This heavy wooden skeleton was discovered during the site's restoration, hidden beneath layers of later, corrugated iron cladding. The building itself is recognized as one of the oldest in Belfast, with parts of its history reaching back to the late seventeenth century. For decades in the twentieth century, it served as a bonded warehouse for spirits, known as Stack N due to its position on the north side of Waring Street. A large, red, painted letter N remains visible on the brick facade today as a remnant of that era.
